FUTURE FIFTEEN

Kowacie Reeves  August 31, 2017

Donte Medlock’s first annual FreshmanU Camp attracted approximately one hundred of the top class of 2021 prospects from Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The eager young hoopsters flocked to Central-Gwinnet High School looking to start their stories. Certified coaches, trainers, and media outlets were in attendance evaluating the talent pool. Here is a look at fifteen freshmen who could take the prep hoop scene by storm.

RJ NOORD- COLUMBIA HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-2, COMBO GUARD

freshman2-1This kid looked varsity ready, showing athleticism, craftiness, and physicality all day long. He has the skills and physique to step in and make an immediate impact at the high school level. Noord is a slashing scorer that attacked defenders at every opportunity. The 6-foot-2 freshman was noticeably one of the top wing players in attendance and is a name to remember in Georgia’s 2021 class.

IAN SCHIEFFELN- GRAYSON HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-5, FORWARD

Schieffeln was an absolute monster on the offensive and defensive glass. After pulling down boards, he instinctively kept the ball up high for easy putback baskets or precise outlet passes. All in all, Schieffeln impressed with his overall fundamentals and relentless effort on both ends. As the 6-foot-5 bruiser continues to develop, we expect him to be an impact player for the Rams sooner than later.

BRYCE McGOWENS- WRENS HIGH, SC

CLASS OF 2021, 6-0, COMBO GUARD

freshman3Right off the bat, McGowens’ long arms and legs jumped out at me. At 6-foot, the lanky built freshman definitely looks to have a lot of inches left in him to grow. Basketball wise, he displayed an impressive offensive repertoire and an IQ that was off the charts. He understands the game and may be in line to play right away at Wrens High. I know it may seem a bit premature, but McGowens (in my opinion) already possesses a low to mid major level skill set. In fact, SoCon member, Mercer University has already offered the young prospect from South Carolina.

ISSAC ABIDDE- WESTOVER HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-6, FORWARD

freshman1At the time being, Abidde is a raw player that doesn’t totally understand the game. However, he has a tremendous upside with his long frame and athletic attributes. The 6-foot-6 forward runs and jumps like a gazelle and will more than likely see varsity minutes as a result. Further, he also showed developing ball handling skills during drills and scrimmages. Once Abidde polishes his overall skillset, he will emerge as the next big time prospect from the South Georgia area.

TYLER SHIRLEY- PEBBLEBROOK HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-5, FORWARD

Shirley was a flat out ball hawk during camp. He did everything from blocking shots on the interior to defending smaller players on the perimeter. Simply put, he has a motor that won’t stop. Overall, the 6-foot-5 wing-forward showed decent ball skills, but playing with high energy end-to-end is his calling card right now.

DARA OLONANDE- BERKMAR HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-4, FORWARD

Olonande is a big physical freshman that protects the rim superbly. The 6-foot-4 power forward erased shot after shot during scrimmages. He is a throwback type of player that hangs his hat on the defensive end. Other than his intimidating presence in the painted area, there really isn’t much more to his game at this point. Players with this approach are a coach’s dream, so I’m sure Olonande will eventually find his way into the rotation at Berkmar.

ASHTON MALONE- NORCROSS HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-11, POINT GUARD

Malone was one of the more mature players on hand this weekend and continues to prove that he is a top point guard in Georgia’s 2021 class. He has been very productive at individual exposure camps and on the travel circuit. Now, the 5-foot-11 floor general is looking to carry that success over into high school. He is definitely one to monitor moving forward.

KOWACIE REEVES JR- WESTSIDE-MACON HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-11, COMBO GUARD

freshman4Reeves Jr. is a slender built guard that showed he could shoot it from the mid-range area as well as beyond the three-point stripe. Defensively, he used his long reach to disrupt opposing ball handlers. With his above average shooting ability, the 5-foot-11 freshman will give himself an opportunity to get some early varsity minutes.

PEYTON DANIELS- TRI CITIES HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-0, COMBO GUARD

Daniels is an offensive minded guard from Metro-Atlanta. The 6-foot incoming freshman was undoubtedly one of the better scorers in attendance, but needs to make a conscious effort in other aspects of his game in order to reach his full potential. Nonetheless, he will probably see valuable varsity time in year one because of his good size and scoring ability.

BROC BIDWELL- WEST FORSYTH HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-10, POINT GUARD

Bidwell was arguably the most crafty lead guard in attendance on Saturday. The 5-foot-10 rising freshman attacked opponents in a variety of ways during scrimmages. He was a problem all day with his elite court vision, tight handle on the ball, and shot making ability. Being able to keep defenders off balance is a huge plus that will make life easy for Bidwell at the high school level.

GREG JONES JR- WARNER ROBINS HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-0, FORWARD

Jones Jr. joins a long list of talented wing players from the Middle-Georgia area. With the Demons returning an experienced core, the young freshman will more than likely have to wait a couple years before he can truly make an impact. However, he showed some promising signs during scrimmages at FreshmanU Camp that should excite the Warner Robins fanbase.

JULIUS LYMON- SOUTH ATLANTA HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 6-4, FORWARD

Lymon is another bouncy young forward with loads of potential. Like many young players at this age, his development is still a work in progress. However, his capacity on the interior popped off the screen as he demonstrated a soft touch and an enforcer’s mentality. At 6-foot-4, with a high motor, his game will translate well to the high school level.

MARCOS EAST- JONESBORO HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-7, POINT GUARD

East shook off opponents with his fancy handles and quickness. He got into the lane at will and effectively sets teammates up for easy buckets. The 5-foot-7 speedster is a ball of energy that was very fun to watch.

ZHARE FLOYD- COLLIN HILLS HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-11, SHOOTING GUARD

Floyd is a good shooter that will also mix it up on the defensive end. With growth, maturity, and attention to detail he has the potential to become one of the best young two-way players in the state. Everything considered, I came away impressed with Floyd’s all-around game.

TRE GRANE- NORTHSIDE-WR HIGH, GA

CLASS OF 2021, 5-10, COMBO GUARD

Grane was another tough-nosed guard that got after it on both ends. Offensively, he got anything he wanted when he decided to be aggressive and on the defensive side, he frustrated ball handlers picking them up ninety-four feet. Expect the 5-foot-10 workhorse to become a key piece for the Eagles within the next couple of years.
